Sleep in, have meals and just relax. On the evening (21:50)  we will take the return flight back to Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to transfer back to our main flights back home. We will just relax and wait for our planes to come.
In the morning, perhaps there’s time for us to do one or two more divings. If not, we will just do some other water activities like snorkeling, free diving, kayaking or just relax at the beach. Or even hit the famous Kota Kinabalu mountain which the town is named after. The mountain has a astonishing height of 4095m!

Side notes:
This trip has a few twists regarding the itineraries.
Originally, we bought the flights to Kota Kinabalu (KK) without knowing what to expect (we didn’t know the famous Sipadan by then), we were just randomly picking out a place and wished to do diving there.

Soon enough afterward, inevitably, we found out about Sipadan.
It doesn’t take much effort to learn that Sipadan is currently one of the top 5 diving spots in the world, and is just an hour from KK by flight; prior to digging anything deeper about Sipadan, we promptly bought a flight to Tawau. Tawau is the main airport serving Semporna, the main town nearby Sipadan islands, which is located on the South East tip of Malay Borneo.

A while after getting the domestic tickets, we started doing research about diving in Semporna. We have learned that Sipadan is restricted to 120 permits per day only (hence not every dive shop/resort is able to offer you the entry permits for diving in Sipadan, and even if they do, the price could get a little on the higher side compared to diving on other islands.

Our flight to Tawau is scheduled to arrive at 0705 on the 27th. We emailed many dive shops asking for packages (6 dives) that would match our trips, but to our surprises, most shop replied that we could only do 3 dives. Here’s why:

1. It would take 1.5 hours from Tawau Airport to Semporna. A ball-park estimation suggests that we could only get to Semporna at around 0900 at the earliest, most boats leave at 0830 to Mabul. So it is doubtful that we could do any divings on that day since we would be missing the boats leaving for Mabul.

2. It is by regulations that you can not dive 18 hours prior to a flight. Our flights returning to KK is at 2155 on the 29th, which means we couldn’t do any diving on that day.

3. That leaves us to dive shops that could wait for us until our arrival in Semporna. Fortunately, there’s one dive shop that said they could wait for us. However, the Sipadan package they offered to us was quite expansive, and the fees have to be wired in advance. We didn’t feel comfortable transferring this amount of money internationally. So we parted ways.

to be finished——–

How to get to Mabul/Kapalai/Sipadan:
From Kota Kinabalu (BKI) to Tawau Airport (TWU)Screen Shot 2018-10-14 at 23.17.09.png

Sipadan is actually one of the surrounding islands off the coast of Semporna on the Celebes sea.

Semporna and the 3 main surrounding islands: Sipadan/Mabul/KapalaiKakaoTalk_Photo_2018-10-04-23-19-09.jpeg
When you arrived in Tawau, if you’re staying with a resort, they will normally transfer you to Semporna; if not, take a taxi or call a grab service with prices ranging between 85-95 ringgits. From Semporna, you will take the resort speed boat to Mabul Island, the main island for the stay. The transfer from Tawau to Semporna takes around 90 minutes while the boat ride will take another 45 minutes.
